Celtics pick rumors: Trade, go foreign, or will Hibbert drop?

22 06 2008

The Boston Celtics will be picking 30th in Thursday’s NBA draft and Danny Ainge is trying to figure out which path to go down. Marc Spears writes today about 3 potential possibilities.

  1. Trade the pick. This could bring 2 second round picks and considering the fact that Ainge has been superb at drafting in second round this could bring much better results than one player at 30.
  2. Draft from overseas. Since Boston’s roster will be crowded next year, a foreign player makes sense because they could have him develop in Eurpoe for a few years (while still controlling his rights) then he come to the Celtics with much more polish.
  3. If Roy Hibbert falls to the Celtics (a scenario Spears says is likely) then the team might have to reconsider their game plan and take him. Hibbert could end up being an upgrade over Kendrick Perkins in the long run, and could serve as the backup center for the Celtics if PJ Brown retires. Remember before he exited last year’s draft, Hibbert was going 5th overall in some mock drafts. To get him at 30 would be a coup.

The success of a #30 pick isn’t going to make or break their fortunes. But, I think that they should go European. I don’t see Hibbert lasting beyond the length of his rookie contract in the pros. With his size, if he couldn’t dominate in college than that does not bode well for his NBA prospects.
