Hank Steinbrenner, just 1.5 months into leading the Yankees, is already losing it.
“This is going to get turned around. If it’s not turned around this year, then it will be turned around next year, by force if we have to.”
Well Hank you’re already doing everything you can spend to get a winner so what exactly are you going to do by using force? Are you going to hire some goons to rough up Bobby Abreu if he strikes out? See how that will go over in the clubhouse?
Hank also complained that the team wasn’t giving enough effort by saying “These players are being paid a lot of money and they had better decide for themselves to earn that money.” then backtracking and saying that they give effort but at the same time need to play harder. (more after jump)
Hank most insane quote however was when he claimed that players needed to forget about injuries and play their butts off. What? Is Arod supposed to forget that he’s injured and play and have that lead to the injury being more serious. Hank, it isn’t that the other players are playing worse because they’re slacking due to Arod and Posada being injured, it’s because two of the Yankees’ best hitters are out with injuries.
Hank also seems to think that the Rays’ success over them is due solely sue to their passion and not that fact that they have had the best farm system in the game for several years now. The Rays are not a flash in the pan. They will be competing with the Red Sox and Yankees for the next years, despite the payroll differences. If the Rays go after some free agents, then they will become a real threat for the division too.
